Take! Space – Women, Body, Space

From ourselves, to our mothers’ generation, to our grandmothers’, how has the scale of space that women are able to occupy, claim, and inhabit shifted across generations?

Why do we adopt certain bodily postures and behaviors in different environments?

Self Gaze Collective x 1m2 Exhibition | Exhibition and Art Market Initiative

This Sound Theater Installation Exhibition centers on the relationship between the female body and space. Collaborating with 1m2 Exhibition Space, the self gaze collective had construct an intimate sound-theatre environment. Guided by voice and by the transition between external public spaces and private domestic interiors, the work invites women participants to physically experience a journey in which the body moves from being observed and regulated toward reclaiming ease and autonomy.

Through this embodied process, participants are encouraged to reflect on a central question: What does it truly mean to own space, rather than be compressed by space? From this reflection, the project seeks to continuously expand the imagination of women’s bodies within both physical and psychological spaces.

“How do women truly come to own space?”

Virginia Woolf once wrote that “a woman must have a room of her own.” This was not only a proposition about physical space, but a declaration of spiritual independence. Today, as women have long stepped beyond the threshold of the home and entered society, the question we face is no longer simply whether we have space, but how we truly inhabit it.

In the workplace, within the family, in public domains, and even within the territory of the self: how do we avoid being defined or compressed, and instead expand freely and grow?

This women’s market is an exploration and practice centered on the notion of “space.” Gathering creativity, thought, and action, the artist and participants collectively discussed how women claim ground in reality, and how they also construct inner territories free from intrusion. From bodily autonomy to the courage of expression, from economic independence to spiritual abundance, the artist believe that genuine space is not granted. Space is continually opened up and defended by women themselves.

Here, we exchange stories, and we exchange strength. Because every inch of space gained is a step toward a freer world.
