Self Gaze – Photography

If the camera were to serve as your eyes,
which part of your body would you look upon?

When we look intently at ourselves,
can we dissolve the gazes imposed by the outside world?

What marks have past events left on our bodies?
In the folds of the skin, and beneath it,
what stories that belong to you are hidden there?

Self Gaze is an interdisciplinary project initiated by theatre creative Star and visual creative Etonmars, aiming to uncover stories within the term ‘Chinese female body’. Through interviews, using camera as a tool of the eye, Self Gaze – When I See Myself offers an observation to the female body in the present moment, exploring how the female body, as the bearer of humanity’s past, present, and future, and as a vessel of societal change, can be sustainably documented with the conscious choice of each woman.

This project is supported by Department of Culture and Education of German Consulate General in Shanghai.
