Etonmars’ work reflects her own sense of alienation – instinctively feeling like her true home was Mars, rather than the culture and environment she grew up in. This sense of disconnection fuels her artistic exploration of identity, trauma, connection between the environment and space. She is interested in especially the collaboration with the in-between, where spaces are shrinking, she creates her space with art and brings the space to her communities.

Her work is often described as deceptively simple. Grounded in a documentative research approach that prioritizes quiet observation over overt intervention, her work reveals the undercurrents of emotional and physical states, while tapping into extending both mental and physical space for marginalized communities.

She founded self gaze collective, together with theater-maker Star Yuexing Sun in 2024, as a loose artist group that help engage mass audience with themes from Self Gaze – a long term project focused on forming an evolving Herstory archive of Chinese female body, liberating from the dominant narratives of History.
